Grade 2 & 3 cricket is suitable for children (boys & girls) in Years 2 & 3 at school. Children in School Year 2 are welcome to play up (or down) a grade at this age depending on friends and abilities but once a child is in School Year 3 (as at the start of a cricket season - Oct) they MUST play in the corresponding Grade 3. This will mean that some children may have to repeat grade 3 if they were playing up a grade the season before.
Teams in Grades 2 & 3 are selected to provide a mix of abilities and schools as much as possible. Our grade coordinators do their utmost to accommodate team mate requestswithin these guidelines, usually with highly successful outcomes. However, we can offer no guarantees and appreciate your understanding that not all request can be met.
Teams (8-a-side) play in the Eastern Districts Cricket Association (EDCA) Saturday morning competition. The limited-over games are approx. 2 hours long and rules are formatted so that all children get the opportunity to participate equally throughout the game. Grades 2 & 3 play with a Junior size Incrediball (soft ball).
These grades have a one hour mid-week practice session (generally Mon or Weds evening, to be confirmed with each team) which follows a structured skills-learning programme. Parent coaches are expected to lead these coaching sessions but will be assisted by one of our youth-aged coaches and supervised by one of our Senior Coaches. A detailed coaching guidebook is provided to each team and parents are encouraged to attend a pre-season coach training session.
Children should wear the Parnell Cricket Club polo shirt which is available from Players Sports, 14 Melrose Street, Newmarket. Ph 522 8170, plus white shorts (or suitable light-coloured shorts). A sunhat is essential and PCC caps and hats are also available at Players Sports. Suitable footwear, such as sneakers, should be worn.
All cricket equipment is provided in a team gear bag so there is no need to invest in cricket gear until you are sure of your child's commitment.
The EDCA cricket competition involves teams from Parnell, University and Grafton cricket clubs and games rotate between the grounds of these 3 cricket clubs. Details of all venues can be found under Ground Maps in the main menu. Please note that the Parnell Cricket Club home ground is divided into two separate areas. Shore Road Reserve is the name of the area beside the main carpark where the main clubrooms are located. Bloodworth Park is the name for the area located westwards across the footbridge from Shore Road Reserve, opposite the dairy.
FRIDAY EVENING CRICKET:
In the 2015-16 season, the majority of games for Grade 3 will be played on Saturday mornings. However there will be some games on Friday evenings due to the shortage of grounds in our area. These games will be played only against AUCC or other Parnell teams. They will be held either at Bloodworth Park or at Merton Road grounds. It is envisaged that each team will play 3 or 4 games on Friday evenings during the season.
