Grades 4 & 5 (School years 4 & 5):

WELCOME TO PARNELL CRICKET CLUB - JUNIOR SECTION:

WHO: Grade 4 & 5 cricket is suitable for children (boys & girls) in Years 4 & 5 at school. Girls in these years are welcome to play either in a mixed team or in a "Girls Only" team. See 'Girls Grade 4 ' section in Junior menu.

Teams in Grades 4 & 5 are selected to provide a mix of abilities and schools as much as possible. Our grade coordinators do their utmost to accommodate team mate requests within these guidelines, usually with highly successful outcomes. However, we can offer no guarantees and appreciate your understanding that not all request can be met.

WHAT: Teams (8-a-side) play in the Eastern Districts Cricket Association (EDCA) Saturday morning competition.  The limited-over games are approx. 2 1/2 hours long. In Grade 4 children play with a Junior size Incrediball (soft) and rules are formatted so that all children get the opportunity to participate equally throughout the game. In Grade 5 children play with a Junior size Hard Ball. In the first half of the season they will play a paired over format to ensure all players get an equal share of playing time. After xmas the format changes so that players all face a minimum number of balls but after that have to leave the crease when they are OUT. (See Draws & Rules section for details)

These grades will have a mid-week practice session organised by their Parent Coach at a time that suits. In addition the Club will schedule regular team net coaching sessions with one of our professional coaches to assist in developing player's basic skills. A coaching schedule for each team will be posted at the start of the season. All team parents are encouraged to attend ACA Coach Qualification programmes. Details of these will be advised throughout the season.

WHEN: The 2010-11 junior season starts on Sat Oct 30th, 2010 and runs until Sat March 26th, 2011 with a break for xmas holidays (details to be advised). Saturday games generally start at 8.30am (8.15 arrival). We recommend that children bring a snack and drink to help energy levels.

WHERE: The EDCA cricket competition involves teams from Parnell, University and Grafton cricket clubs and games rotate between the grounds of these 3 cricket clubs. A detailed draw will be posted under DRAWS & RULES in the Grade 4 & 5 area of the website. Details of all venues can be found under GROUND MAPS in the main menu. Please note that the Parnell Cricket Club home ground is divided into two separate areas. Shore Road Reserve is the name of the area beside the main carpark where the main clubrooms are located. Bloodworth Park is the name for the area located across the footbridge from Shore Road Reserve, opposite the dairy.

WEAR: Children should wear the Parnell Cricket Club polo shirt which is available from Cricket Express, 29 Enfield St, Mt Eden (see LINKS on the website for further details). In Grade 4 children generally wear white shorts. In Grade 5 we recommend that children wear white long pants as these are often more comfortable when wearing cricket pads. Suitable footwear, such as sneakers, should be worn. A sunhat is essential and PCC caps and hats are also available at Cricket Express.

In Grade 5 we strongly recommend that players wear a cricket helmet when batting and suggest that they acquire their own helmet to ensure best fit. One helmet is provided in each team gear bag. All other required cricket equipment is provided in a team gear bag although many children start investing in some of their own gear by this age.

LIKE ALL SPORTS CLUBS PCC RELIES ON VOLUNTEERS TO RUN EFFECTIVELY. PARENTS & CAREGIVERS ARE URGED TO BECOME ACTIVELY INVOLVED IN THEIR CHILD'S TEAM. NOT ONLY DO CHILDREN ENJOY THE EXPERIENCE MORE WHEN THEIR PARENTS ARE INVOLVED BUT THE TASKS BECOME EASIER WHEN THEY ARE NOT LEFT TO ONLY ONE OR TWO ADULTS. OUR AIM IS TO MAKE PARTICIPATION IN CRICKET AS EASY AS ENJOYABLE AS POSSIBLE - FOR BOTH CHILDREN & PARENTS.
